How to Measure a TV

When we think about decorating our home, or moving house, one of the first essentials we think of is not the couch, but the TV.

Watching TV is one of our most favored ways to kick back and relax upon an evening!

If you are looking to buy a new TV, then you will want to ensure that it fits in with the room, is at a comfortable angle to watch, and is the best quality that you can afford.

When shopping for a new TV, you may notice that the televisions available are measured in inches. These can come in various different sizes from 26 inch, to 50 inch and even some up to 70 inches.

You may also wonder how these TVs are measured accurately, or how you can measure a TV to ensure that it will fit within your desired space.

How to measure a TV

Measuring a television is actually a rather simple task, that will only take a few moments.

However, if you measure a TV before purchasing it, then you will know straight away whether it will fit in comfortably within your home, and save yourself the stress later on trying to make a TV fit when it is too large.

There are actually two ways of measuring a TV, and to find out if it will fit in the desired space, you will have to do both.

You will first have to measure the screen size, to see if it is suitable for what you want to watch, and you will also have to measure the outer, whole unit size to see if it will fit.

For example, you will want to purchase a TV with a larger screen size, if you want to watch films or TV shows in great, high quality.

Whereas, if you want to watch the news in your kitchen whilst you cook, then a more compact TV with a smaller screen size will be more suitable. But overall, you will have to check what size the whole unit is before purchasing.

Measuring the screen size

The size of the TV that you will find on the product description, or the box (55 inch/43 inch etc) is actually the measurement of the screen size diagonally.

Therefore, to check the size of the TV, you will need to measure the screen size.

To do this, you will need to place a measuring tape in one corner, for example, the left-hand corner.

Then, you will need to pull the tape measure diagonally, until it reaches the top right-hand corner, so that the tape is measuring diagonally across the screen.

Ensure that you are measuring where the actual screen begins, and not from corner to corner of the whole TV. Just focus on measuring where the screen starts diagonally across to the other side.

The distance between those two corners will be the screen’s size. You can measure this in inches to see whether the screen size is suitable for your needs.

Measuring the whole TV unit

Additionally, you will want to measure the whole TV unit, so that you can check whether it will fit in with the intended space you want to keep it, and whether it is right for your home.

First, you will need to place your tape measure at the very edge of the TV. Start at the left-hand corner, and this time start where the plastic or bevel edge of the TV begins.

Pull the tape measure from the left corner, all the way to the bottom edge of the TV and towards the right corner. Then, check the measurement. This is the length or the width of your TV!

Once you have done this, you can use the tape measure to find the height of your TV.

This is done by using the bottom of the right-hand corner, (or left) and pulling the tape up to the top of the TV. Make sure that you are sticking to the outer edge of the TV and measuring its whole size.

Finally, you can measure the depth of the TV, or how thick it is.

Most modern televisions are relatively slim and able to mount on a wall or fit in a TV unit, however, if you have a wall built out to hide your TV, then you will want to ensure that it will fit perfectly, hiding all of the cables inside.

How to find the right TV for your home

Even if you have measured your TV and believe it will fit in with your room, it may still not be suitable. This is because you should sit at a safe distance away from the TV screen to prevent eye strain, particularly with larger TV screens.

For instance, you should also measure the perfect distance to watch your TV. This can be done by finding the accurate screen size and multiplying it by 1.5 – 2.5.

This will give you a sum, that you can then divide by 12 to find the right amount of distance (in feet) that you should sit to watch the television.

For example, if you have a 55-inch television, then you would multiply 55 by 1.5 (or 2.5 if you prefer it further away), and then divide the number by 12. This would mean that with a 55-inch television, you should sit at least 6.8 feet away.

In addition, you can also find the perfect TV for your home with this quick and easy guide. All you have to do is measure the distance from the main sofa to the location in which you are going to put your TV.

Measure this number in inches, and then you can divide it by two, to get the perfect screen size for the room.

For example, if you measure the distance from your sofa to where the TV is going, and the distance is 100 inches, then a 50-inch screen size TV will be just right.
